  • The festival is dedicated to Sun and Chhathi Maiya (Mother Shashti or Usha). The abstinence offer their gratitude to the Sun God Surya along with the Goddesses- Usha (first rays of the morning) and Pratyusha (last rays of the evening) because it is believe that the Sun is a prime source of energy that sustains all lives on the Earth.

  • Unlike other Hindu Poojas which involve idol worship, this festival is dedicated to worshipping a natural phenomenon which is in fact the life force of our planet.

  • Chhath Puja is referred to as the only Vedic Festival celebrated in India.This puja first finds mention in the Rig Veda which contains hymns worshiping the Sun God and describes similar rituals.

  • As per the rituals, women need to fast for four days following all the rules strictly.

  • It is believed that Surya Putra Karna who was the first to start this puja. According to the legends, Karna, Son of Surya & Ruler of Anga-Desh (Now Bhagalpur in Bihar) observed Chhath Puja or Surya Shashti with sheer devotion. It is said that Karna had gained supreme powers by performing Chhath rituals. This had made Karna grow into a powerful and valiant warrior.

  • The puja helps improve the immunity of the human body, provides an antiseptic effect to the body of the devotee and speeds up the healing process.

  • In the very first day of Chath Pooja named nahai khai women take dip in holy water, preferably of river Ganga to purify themselves. They are allowed to consume only one meal in the morning on this day and their next meal is consumed on the evening of the next day.

  • On the second day (the day before Chhath) Panchami, devotees fast for whole day and break their fast in the evening after sunset after the worship of earth.They offer Rasiao-kheer, puris, fruits in the puja. After taking meal in the evening, they go on a fast without water for the next 36 hours.
  • The third day is called saandhya argha or pehla argha. The devotees fasting during chhath need to refrain themselves from eating anything on this day and devote offerings called argha to the setting sun.

  • he last day of Chhath is known as suryoday argha or doosra argha. On this day, the devotees worship the rising sun and break their fast by consuming the holy Prasad and have fruits and sweets as well.
  •  It is celebrated in the Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Chandigarh, Gujarat, Bangalore, Mauritius, Fiji, South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Suriname, and Jamaica, United States, United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Macau, Japan, and Indonesia by Bihari aboriginal migrant.
